A Brief History
The Origin of Crunchy
In 1995, Gabe Hayward created a fictional character named Crunchy, an intelligent bird-like creature whose likeness became the symbol of this company. Coined in 2001, the term "CrunchyCo" is a combination of that character's name (Crunchy), and the abbreviation for company (Co).
Crunchy Comics
In 1998, long before "CrunchyCo" existed, Gabe Hayward and Aaron Campion began several different comic series' under the publication name "Crunchy Comics." These comics were never released to the public, but became the foundation for future projects.
Crunchy Games
Although "Crunchy Games" was not the official label at the time, Gabe and Aaron did design a number of board games and card games starting in 1999 that were based on their current comic series'. Many of the games remained unfinished and unshared, but some versions were loosly distributed.
Crunchy Films
Gabe and Aaron began making (extremely) amateur films and animated shorts in the year 2000, most of which have never been released to the public. All of their film work from that point on was labeled under "Crunchy Productions," which was later changed to Crunchy Films.
Crunchy Records
In 2002, Gabe and Aaron started selling a wide selection of bootleg music CDs to their peers for low prices. When mp3's became all the rage, they ditched that scheme and from that point on released only their own original music on what became known as "Crunchy Records."
CrunchyCo.com
When Gabe and Aaron discovered the magical capabilities of the internet in 2001, they began their own site to showcase their art. The term "CrunchyCo" was first used as the site name to encompass all branches of the company. The website went through many stages, but it wasn't until 2006 that they got serious about it. They purchased their domain that year, and have been cultivating it ever since. The result is the CrunchyCo.com you see now, and it will continue to be a growing outlet for artistic expression for years to come.
The Five Branches
CrunchyCo is all about art, but "art" can often be too broad and vague a term. That is why we have broken it down into five major categories:
The art that enters our minds through our ears. CrunchyCo embraces the astounding ability of music to ignite feeling into our souls with nothing but invisible sound waves. The Music branch of CrunchyCo is open to music of all styles and genres.
Using a series of related images woven together with (or without) text, is one of the most powerful ways to tell a story. The Comics branch of CrunchyCo incorporates traditional paperbacks, graphic novels, comic strips, and webcomics, as well as other non-graphical publications (like regular books).
The art of film combines the fluid capture of motion with the elements of sound and dialogue. Appealing to more than one sense, we can experience works of fiction in the most realistic of ways. The Film branch of CrunchyCo recognizes live-action and animated films (short and feature-length), episodic series', documentaries, music videos, and more.
While not art on their own, games can contain and utilize artwork in a way that no other media can. Games enable us to actually interact with dynamic artistic elements that could only be observed otherwise. The Games branch of CrunchyCo is composed of board games, card games, video games of any genre, and any other type of game that incorporates artistic elements.
Extracting feelings and stories from a static image is the classic way to experience art, and human beings have been communicating this way since we first scribbled pictures on the walls of caves. The Images branch of CrunchyCo includes graphic design, sketch art, pen and ink, painting, photography, sculpture, craft, and basically any other static artistic image or representation.
Structural Components
The People
Starting with the masterminds behind it all, we have Gabe Hayward and Aaron Campion, the co-presidents and founders. Standing alongside them are their fine staff who work long hours for no pay. At the core of everything are the talented artists and their adoring fans. Without the people who support us, CrunchyCo would be nothing.
The Website
CrunchyCo.com is the central hub for the communication of ideas and artwork. It is the place where we showcase and share our work with the rest of the world. Anyone can visit, make connections, and take in everything we have to offer.
Our Projects
Here at CrunchyCo HQ, we are constantly working on various art projects within our five branches. We take great pleasure in expressing our visions. We wish to to both entertain and inspire with everything we create.
Our Products and Services
CrunchyCo offers many products as a result of our work. In addition to hosting our own assortment, we wish to extend our reach to artists around the world with our expanding services.
Values and Beliefs
There are too many forces out there working to constrain and restrict artistic expression. To counter this, we hold ourselves to a set of ideas that promote artistic freedom.
#1
The ability to create art is the most significant aspect of human existence.
As human beings, we have the power to create worlds with our thoughts and define our reality with our works of fiction. It is this ability that makes us exceptional.
#2
Art is not about money, nor should it ever be.
Art is about expression and personal satisfaction. Those who make art for money alone do not make art, just a bunch of worthless garbage.
#3
Everyone has the potential to create art.
Art is not a practice for the elite; it is an open canvas in which anyone with the right motivation can appreciate and make additions to.
#4
The validity of an art peice is relative to the observer.
Art has no absolute rights or wrongs. Too many people think they can define what makes a work of art "good", but their rules are not truly universal, only applied within context.
#5
Good art should be sought out rather than simply taken in.
There are large and powerful forces in this world attempting to decide what we like and control the flow of artistic progression. Because of this, it is important to stray away from the mainstream media and discover things for ourselves.
